Book Vending Machine Promotes Reading and Character

Rattan Elementary’s book vending machine is more than just a fun way to get a new book. It is a celebration of character, kindness, and hard work.

Three years ago, Rattan Elementary counselor Megan Massey contacted Atmos Energy to ask if they would help the school bring a unique idea to life. Atmos Energy granted that request by funding the school’s first book vending machine and providing the first round of books. Since then, the machine has become a favorite tradition at Rattan Elementary.

Students earn Coyote Bucks by showing good character, going above and beyond, and doing the right thing even when no one is watching. They can save their Coyote Bucks and exchange them for a token, which allows them to “purchase” one book from the machine. Rattan’s Habit Heroes program, which is the school’s version of Student of the Month, also rewards students with tokens.

Massey said, “Kids get so excited when they earn a token to go to the machine and pick out a book. Many students ask how they can get one. Once they learn that Habit Heroes receive tokens, they start striving to become one. It’s amazing to see how motivated they are.”

Today, Ms. Massey gave a token to Victoria, a new second-grade student at Rattan Elementary. Each morning, Victoria can be seen walking her younger sibling to class and showing constant patience and care toward both of her siblings. Her kindness and quiet leadership are a perfect example of the positive character traits that the school encourages through this program.

The school continues to keep the machine filled through generous family donations, community support, and proceeds from Rattan’s annual book fair. Families, community members, and parents are invited to donate books or contribute funds to help provide a steady supply of new books for students.

This program has become a powerful example of how Rattan Elementary promotes literacy, strong character, and community connection through the simple joy of reading.
