Sewing Creativity

Written by Mackenzie Miller

Makerspace is not just a class to learn new skills; it's a direct connection to the community. In October and November, makerspace students created plush monsters using handmade templates designed by our local elementary school students. These templates are crazy with multiple colors and shapes, and then our makerspace students turn them to life! With every stitch and thread, these monsters have come to life, and each one tells a unique story. Jennica Watson said, “It was difficult to turn the drawing into something they could hold, but I think it turned out good!” The students have not only learned how to sew but explored their creativity in new and exciting ways. Mrs. Coleman said “We started this last year and it’s become a great way to connect with the kindergarten students. My students get to personally gift the kindergarteners their own ‘monster’ of their own design.” This project has been a fantastic opportunity for them to experiment with different materials and techniques, resulting in a collection of one of a kind plush monsters. And the students at Harlow who received their imagination-come-true beamed with pride. Alexandra Holguin said, “it was really good to see them smile and they were so happy to see their monster.” Lillian Rose added, “It was a really hard project, but I’m really proud of what I made and it was totally worth it.”
