From Scares to Spotlight: CCMS Theater Takes the Stage

CCMS Theater kicked off the year with its first play, “La Llorona,” a spooky Halloween story that was perfect for middle school vibes. The show drew such a huge crowd that tickets sold out at the door, sending Ms. Speed sprinting to grab more—and then those sold out too!

Mr. Speed explained that this play brought unique challenges for everyone involved. Quiet students had to learn how to project and step confidently into the spotlight, while naturally loud and energetic students had to tone their roles down and act in a softer, more subtle way. Behind the scenes, rehearsals were intense: 60–70% of their time went into blocking—where actors should stand, move, and react—while the remaining 30–40% focused on technical details like props, lighting, and costumes. Memorizing lines was homework, though Mr. Speed said spending a few days in a calm room with comfy clothes just reading and rereading lines helped the cast lock everything in.

Now, the theater program is preparing for its next production—Alice. This one is a UIL competition and is for Honors Theater students only, but everyone gets a role in bringing it to life. As a one-act play, the performance will run about 30 minutes, and students will perform in front of other theater groups and a panel of judges. Awards could include Best Performer, Best Technical Elements, and more.

“My favorite part of teaching theater is when I see all those elements, all the challenges, come together and finally displayed for all to see,” said Mr. Speed. “For anyone even thinking about theater, I encourage you to just come and try it! Everything in life can be practiced in theater class. We build confidence—and have a ton of fun doing it!”

If this first show is any hint of what’s coming, the stage at CCMS is going to stay busy—and packed!
