UIL Homeschool Participation

Unfortunately, in that case your child would not be eligible to participate in UIL activities for the remainder of that school year as a homeschool student. This rule exists in Texas state law. Once the new school year begins, your child is eligible again under the homeschool participation rules.

Your child participates at the school they would normally attend based on your home address — your attendance zone school. If your district has opted out, your child may go to the closest school (by physical distance) that does allow homeschool participation. The school district, not you or the school, determines which campus is the closest.

Homeschooled students can absolutely participate at the varsity level, as long as they meet the same eligibility rules as any other student. There are a few situations where a review may be required first (see eligibility rules above), but being homeschooled does not automatically limit your child to JV.

Yes — there is a 15-day waiting period (called the "15-day rule") before a student can compete at the Varsity level. This starts from the day your child first attends a practice. If your child is joining after the 6th day of school, day 1 of the 15 days is their first day at practice. Your child may also need to fill out a Previous Athletic Participation Form (PAPF) — the same form any student joining a school sport or activity would complete. This form documents where and when your child has previously participated in the sport or activity. 

Yes. For the first six weeks of the school year, your homeschooled child must show grade-level academic proficiency using a nationally recognized standardized test — such as the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, Stanford Achievement Test, or similar. Your child needs to score in the average or above-average range. You as the parent are responsible for arranging and paying for this test. A passing score covers the current school year and the next one too, so you won't need to retest every year. The school will accept results from a third-party testing provider.

Yes! As long as your district allows homeschool participation, your child can begin at any point in the school year. They'll need to complete the required forms and wait 15 days before competing at the Varsity level. The 15-day clock starts on their first day of practice.

No — not in the same sport at the same time. Once your child is participating in a UIL activity (like basketball), they cannot also compete in basketball through a homeschool league or other outside organization during that same season. They can participate in non-school recreational activities or club teams, as long as those are separate from UIL activities.

Your homeschooled child is subject to the same policies as enrolled students — including any participation fees, transportation policies, insurance requirements, and the school's code of conduct and behavior standards. 

During the school day, athletic training is limited to one class period (no more than 60 minutes). This rule applies to homeschooled students too. Outside of the school day, your child can train as they normally would — UIL rules don't restrict private coaching outside school hours.

For UIL purposes, a homeschool student is one who is not enrolled in any public, private, or charter school. The UIL calls these students "non-enrolled students." Texas law treats a legitimate homeschool as a type of private school, and these students access UIL through a special homeschool participation pathway.

To be a valid homeschool in Texas, you need three things: the instruction must be genuine and in good faith (not just a way to avoid attendance), the curriculum must use visual materials like books, workbooks, or online lessons you control, and it must cover five core subjects — reading, spelling, grammar, math, and good citizenship. No state registration or approval is required.
