Human Sexuality Curriculum
Curriculum Requirements
Each year, Anna ISD provides human sexuality curriculum to students in grades 5 through 12. The curriculum is aligned with Texas Health TEKS and prioritizes abstinence from sexual activity as the best choice for unmarried persons of school age and the only 100% effective method in preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Human sexuality curriculum is governed by Texas Education Code (TEC) 28.004(i).
Implementation in Anna ISD
Human sexuality curriculum is delivered to students through presentations conducted by 180 Degrees, a non-profit organization. Parents are provided the opportunity to opt-out their children from participating without subjecting their student to any disciplinary action, academic penalty, or other sanction. Campuses will send out opt-out forms at least 14 days prior to scheduled instruction. Students whose parents do not opt them out will take part in the program.
Parental Involvement and Importance of Home Education
Anna ISD emphasizes that sex education should begin at home. Parents or legal guardians are recognized as the primary educators of their children and play a pivotal role in influencing their health decisions. The lessons provided in school are designed to complement and reinforce what parents or legal guardians are teaching at home, rather than replacing it.
180 Degrees Program
The 180 Degrees program is a sexual risk avoidance initiative designed to educate teenagers about the consequences of premarital sex and promote healthy marriage relationships. The curriculum has been reviewed by the Anna ISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) to ensure its content is grade-level specific and developmentally appropriate.
Parental Engagement Opportunities
In-person parent presentations are scheduled prior to student presentations. For more detailed information about the curriculum, parents can visit the 180 Degrees website,
