Health-Related Services
Each school year, Anna ISD provides parents and guardians with information about the health-related services available to students. This annual notice is required by Texas Education Code §§26.0083 and 26.009.
State law groups student health services into three categories. Understanding these categories helps families know when parent permission is required and when they have the option to decline services.
General Caretaking
General caretaking includes routine, noninvasive care provided when a student has a minor illness or injury during the school day.
Examples include:
- Applying a bandage
- Assisting with a minor nosebleed
- Checking a student's temperature
- Providing basic comfort measures
These routine services do not require parent consent.
Health-Related Services (Opt-Out)
Health-related services are short-term, noninvasive activities that support a student's mental, emotional, or physical health and well-being.
Under Texas law, consent for these services is presumed unless a parent or guardian chooses to opt out in writing.
Examples of health-related services that may be available in Anna ISD include:
- First aid for minor injuries
- Nutrition education
- Wellness education and promotion
- Vision, hearing, scoliosis, and Type 2 diabetes screenings
- Social skills instruction
- Emotional regulation activities
- Stress management strategies
- Prevention programs, including bullying, substance abuse, and suicide prevention
- Crisis prevention training
- Physical education opportunities
- Physical fitness assessments
These services may vary by campus, grade level, or student need. Not every service will be provided to every student.
Health-Care Services (Opt-In)
Health-care services involve medical treatments, procedures, or psychological or psychiatric testing or treatment.
Examples include:
- Administering medication
- Clinical therapy
- Telehealth services
These services will not be provided without specific parent or guardian consent, except in an emergency or when otherwise required by law.
Parent Rights
Parents and guardians receive this notice annually before the first instructional day of the school year or upon student enrollment.
Parents may decline any health-related (opt-out) services by submitting a signed Opt-Out Form to their child's campus. An opt-out decision may be changed at any time during the school year by notifying the campus in writing.
