Safety & Security

At Anna ISD, the safety and security of our students and staff are our top priorities. We are committed to continually assessing areas for improvement and have implemented several measures to enhance safety in our district. We work closely with the Anna Police Department, routinely sharing information regarding on-campus incidents and community crime that may involve our students, as well as threat assessment data. Through a comprehensive approach that includes training, audits, and community collaboration, we have established robust safety measures across our campuses.

Emergency Preparedness

Safety Audits and Procedures

In response to the Uvalde tragedy, the following safety measures are mandated by the state and are part of our proactive approach:

Partial Safety Audits: Conducted annually before the school year.
Emergency Plan Reviews: Regular reviews of all emergency plans and access control procedures.
Staff Training: All staff, including substitutes, are trained on safety procedures.
Threat Assessment Training: All threat assessment team members receive training.
Mandatory Drills: We schedule all required drills for the school year.

Every campus undergoes safety audits by Region 10 and is regularly checked by the AISD Police Department, going above and beyond the Texas Education Agency's requirement of an audit every three years.

Building Security Measures

Door Checks: All exterior doors have been examined to ensure operational locking systems.
Classroom Security: All classroom doors must remain locked and closed.
Adult Supervision: Staff are present in the hallways during passing periods to monitor student activity.
Controlled Access: Each campus features controlled access points, with hardened and locked security vestibules during school hours.
Visitor Protocol: All visitors must check in at the front office and provide valid government identification for entry.
Portables Security: Portables are locked and fenced where feasible.
Panic Buttons: Front offices are equipped with panic buttons directly connected to the police department and Collin County Sheriff’s Office for immediate 911 response.

Additional Security Measures

In addition to our highly trained police force, several less obvious security measures are in place on every campus:

Surveillance: More than 500 cameras are monitored by the Anna ISD Police Department.
Bullet-Resistant Glass: Installed in strategic areas to enhance safety.
Strategic Patrols: Implemented patrol schedules and routes for increased visibility and response.
Confidential Response Measures: Additional security measures are in constant operation; however, details cannot be disclosed due to the need for secrecy surrounding these assets.

Defender Program

Established in 2017, the Defender Program trains vetted staff members to carry handguns on district property. Participants must meet rigorous standards, including:

Employment: Must be employed by AISD for a minimum of two years.
Licensure: Hold a current license to carry in Texas.
Psychological Evaluation: Pass a police psychological assessment.
Firearm Training: Complete firearms simulator scenarios and attend a certification program.
Practice Sessions: Participate in practice sessions every other month.
Annual Training: Attend mandatory summer training each year.
Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to all program regulations.
